Red Light Therapy

Celluma red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of light that interact with cells in the body, a process known as photobiomodulation (PBM). Celluma treatments typically use combinations of red light (around 640–660 nm), near-infrared light (around 880 nm), and, blue light for acne treatments.

Acne

On the Celluma Acne setting, the device primarily uses blue light, often combined with red light.

  • Blue light (around 465 nm): Targets the acne-causing bacteria Cutibacterium acnes. The bacteria naturally contain light-sensitive molecules called porphyrins. When blue light activates these molecules, they produce reactive oxygen species that damage and kills the bacteria.

  • Red light (around 640 nm): Penetrates deeper into the skin than blue light. It doesn't kill acne bacteria directly. Instead, it helps:

  • Reduces inflammation and redness.

  • Supports tissue repair and healing after pimples.

  • Helps the skin recover more efficiently.

  • Reduces the likelihood of post-inflammatory marks by speeding healing.

Rather than completely suppressing inflammation, PBM appears to help the body regulate it, supporting a more balanced healing response.
